Put Cloud Hands on your home screen

There is nothing to download and no app store involved. Your phone can save this site to the home screen as an icon of its own, and opening it from there gives you the app full screen — no address bar, no tabs, no hunting for the right one at seven in the morning. It takes about fifteen seconds and the instructions differ by phone, so find yours below.

iPhone and iPad

Use Safari for this. Apple only offers “Add to Home Screen” from its own browser reliably, so if you are reading this in an in-app browser — from a message, or inside another app — open it in Safari first.

  1. Open this site in Safari — this page will do.
  2. Tap the Share button: the square with an arrow coming out of the top. On an iPhone it is at the bottom of the screen, on an iPad at the top right.
  3. Scroll down the list of options and tap Add to Home Screen. It sits below the row of sharing apps, so you will probably have to scroll past AirDrop and Messages to reach it.
  4. Give it a name — Cloud Hands is filled in already — and tap Add.
  5. The icon appears on your home screen. Open it from there rather than from Safari and it runs full screen.

Android

In Chrome this is usually one tap, because Chrome offers it for you. If it has not offered, do it by hand.

  1. If a bar appears at the bottom saying Install app or Add to home screen, tap it and you are done.
  2. Otherwise tap the three dots at the top right of Chrome.
  3. Choose Add to home screen — on newer versions it is Install app — and confirm.
  4. In Firefox the same thing lives under the three dots as Install; in Samsung Internet it is Add page toHome screen.

Mac, Windows and Linux

Worth doing if you practise in front of a laptop propped on a chair, which is more common than it sounds.

  1. In Chrome or Edge, look for the small install icon at the right-hand end of the address bar — a screen with a downward arrow — and click it.
  2. If it is not there, open the browser menu and look for Install Cloud Hands, or Cast, save and share Install page as app.
  3. In Safari on macOS, use File Add to Dock.
  4. Firefox on the desktop does not support this. The site works perfectly well in a tab; you are only missing the window.

What installing actually changes

  • It opens full screen, with no address bar. On a phone propped against a wall that is a visible amount of extra room for the video.
  • It gets its own icon, so it is one tap from the home screen rather than a tab you have to find.
  • It updates itself. It is the website, so whatever is here is what you get — there is no version to keep up to date and nothing to reinstall.
  • It takes up a negligible amount of space. There are no videos stored on your phone; they stream from YouTube as they always did.

What it does not do

  • It does not work offline. Every class is a YouTube video, so the app needs a connection exactly as much as it did before. Installing it is a shortcut, not a download.
  • It does not send you notifications, and it never will. There are no reminders in this app, installed or not — a practice you are nagged into is not the habit we are trying to build.
  • It does not sync. There is still no account. Your settings and your practice history live in the browser storage on that one device, which also means the installed app may start with an empty streak even though your browser has one — on some phones an installed web app keeps its own separate storage. Nothing is lost; it is just not shared.
  • It is not in the App Store or on Google Play, and there is no plan to put it there.

If it is not working

I cannot find “Add to Home Screen” on my iPhone

Two usual causes. You are not in Safari — an in-app browser inside another app does not offer it — or you have not scrolled far enough down the share sheet, since it sits below the apps. Private browsing also hides it.

How do I remove it later?

Exactly like any other app: press and hold the icon and choose delete or remove. On a computer, open the installed window’s menu and choose uninstall. Removing it can also clear the practice history stored inside it, so if a streak matters to you, know that before you delete.

Do I have to install it at all?

No. Everything works in an ordinary browser tab and always will. This page exists because opening a tab is a small amount of friction, and small amounts of friction are what stop a daily practice.

Once it is on your home screen

Open it and answer three questions — how steady you are on your feet, how long you have, what you are training for — and it builds today.
